About Us

Founded in 2007 with significant support from the Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF), the ACE Mentor Program of Greater Sacramento introduces interested high school students to the building industry’s wide range of exciting career opportunities.

The program is open to any student who would like to learn more about a future in architecture, engineering, construction or the building trades.

In our first full year as the Sacramento Affiliate, we served three high schools, with 25 mentors and over 50 students. The students at River City High School in West Sacramento built structures out of gumdrops and toothpicks during their architecture and engineering sessions. Next, they had the opportunity to tour a local mechanical plant and watch laser cutters work on sheet metal.

Perhaps one of the most creative projects and certainly involved playing with Legos. The students took a construction job from start to finish with a set of toys. Following that mini-project, Team River City had one of the most exciting field trips of the year, to the new 22 story CalSTRS Building in West Sacramento.

Finally, before beginning work on their projects, the student went out to Teichert Construction for a chance to drive the heavy equipment.

The Team at San Juan High School in Citrus Heights also had an exciting year. First, they built structures out of toothpicks and marshmallow to see who could build the highest structure. They also had the opportunity to tour a manufacturing plant all the way in Lincoln. CA. They did a mechanical take-off and learned how to be estimators.

One of the most fun projects at San Juan was the dirt digging. They were given a bucket and a kitchen utensil and asked to dig a trench inside the bucket. Without using their hands. Imagine how hard that is with a knife! Then, Team San Juan got to see the real dirt movers as they headed out the Teichert, in the rain, to drive the heavy machinery.

Finally, our Team in Galt had the opportunity to watch what an earthquake can do a structure – truly an educational demonstration! Also, they got to tour the Muddox Brick plant and each student (and mentor!) got to take home his or her own personalized brick! They also toured a job site in Lodi, spent time in architectural offices and got to learn how to lay brick properly.

In 2008/2009, ACE Sacramento is proud to have the following schools participating in our program: Calvine High School, Elk Grove Casa Roble High School, Orangevale Cordova High School, Rancho Cordova Galt High School, Galt Granite Bay High School, Granite Bay Kennedy High School, Sacramento Lincoln High School, Stockton Oak Ridge High School, El Dorado Hills Oakmont High School, Roseville Rio Linda High School, Rio Linda River City High School, West Sacramento San Juan High School, Citrus Heights Sheldon High School, Elk Grove

Our Projects

As for the final presentation, each team received the same instructions:

To prepare a three acre site located at the intersection of First and Main Streets for development. Utilize the site as a regional park and community center. The site has been vacant for years. Residential housing surrounds the site on two sides and it is in close proximity to two major freeways, one running north/south and one running east/west.

ACE is seeking proposals to build a recreation center for use by the community at large. This is a suburban area with many families as potential end users.

Each project should be proposed based on the following criteria:

  • Development of a three acre lot
  • Construction of 20,000 square foot structure
  • Construction of a 150 car parking lot
  • An Engineers estimate of $10 million

All of the projects were excellent, but Team Galt took home the perpetual ACE trophy with their BIM model.

In 2007, four student teams from Washington High School collaborated on a variety of projects, including snack bars, a skateboard park and an entertainment amphitheatre.

To expose students to the full range of industry career opportunities, the projects included field trips to the Sacramento Power Facility and the construction jobsite for Washington High School’s new building. In addition, the group visited engineering, architectural and construction offices, as well as those of various specialists, such as estimators and schedulers.

At the end of the program, students presented their project solutions during a celebration before an audience of parents, teachers and school administrators, the ACE board of directors and other invited guests.
