About Us
The ACE Mentor Program of South Florida helps high school students discover the wide range of career options available to them in architecture, construction and engineering.
During the program year, professionals from local building industry firms as well as high school and university educators meet weekly after school with teams of juniors and seniors to share experiences and expertise. Students visit construction sites, research and meet with suppliers, and tour the offices of industry professionals. They also work in teams on projects reflecting real-world challenges.
Begun in 2005 at Miami Senior High School, our program involves from 20 to 30 students each year. It is one of many ACE programs launched nationwide by the Turner Construction Company.
The ACE Mentor Program of South Florida has now expanded into Broward, Palm Beach and Martin Counties for the 2008/2009 school years with five additional high schools being sponsored by local A/E/C businesses with the support of AGC and ABC.
Our Projects
In 2007-2008, our student teams used an estimating project to explore key facets of building design and construction. Focusing on flooring for a large two-tower condominium, students selected materials, and interviewed flooring suppliers and installers to determine which ones would best meet the project’s stringent budgetary and functional requirements.
Students also toured a similar project that was under construction to view units in different stages of completion. In addition, the teams talked with professional architectural and construction estimators, learned to read floor plans and increased their jobsite safety awareness.
Prior to project completion, people from Turner Construction’s marketing department showed the students how to use PowerPoint materials to effectively showcase their solutions. The program concluded with presentations at a special event attended by mentors, families and other guests.
