San Antonio
About Us
Founded in 2006, the ACE Mentor Program of Greater San Antonio, Inc. consists of building industry professionals and educators who help high school students learn more about potential careers in architecture, engineering and construction.
During the program, students work in teams under the mentorship of experienced professionals, who guide them through projects that meet real industry requirements. The result is an opportunity to gain practical insight into what building industry professionals do to transform their ideas from an initial concept into a finished building.
In addition, every qualified senior who goes on to university study in a building industry-related field is eligible for scholarships from us and our national office.
Our Projects
Over 40 students divided into two teams, one from John Jay High School, the other from Roosevelt High School, worked on “mock” projects that addressed “real-world” situations. One of these was a masterplan for the AT&T arena, including condominiums, a hotel park and a natatorium, while the other was a design for a new high school cafeteria.
In addition to working on their projects, students visited professional firms, toured drafting studios at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s new architecture college, and attended lectures on industry topics.
At the conclusion of the program year, students presented their design solutions. We also awarded three $2,000 scholarships to students about to pursue academic programs leading to a career in our industry. In addition, one of these students received the Professional Service Industry Scholarship for Engineering. Presented by the ACE national office, the scholarship is worth $4,000.
