Greater New York City

About Us

The ACE Mentor Program of Greater NY was the founding affiliate of the ACE Mentor Program. We began in 1994 with three teams comprised of industry professionals from 17 mentoring firms and 90 students. Today, ACE GNY has grown to almost 50 teams, over 700 mentors from over 200 firms, and introduced over 1,300 students in New York City, Long Island and Westchester to the design and build field in 2020-2021 academic season.

Program Structure

Students in New York City meet with their mentors in professional offices throughout the five boroughs – primarily in Midtown and Lower Manhattan; students in Westchester and Long Island primarily meet in local high schools or community facilities.  Mentor teams meet from late October through mid-May; in May four teams are paired together to present the projects that they have developed with their mentors in front of families, friends, mentors, teachers and leaders from the A/C/E industry – audiences reach 150-200 people at each final presentation event.

Throughout the season, students:

  • Learn what it is like to work in the design and construction industry
  • Participate in fun hands-on projects to learn A/C/E concepts
  • Visit live construction sites like the Second Avenue subway, LaGuardia Airport, Hudson Yards and many more complex construction sites changing the landscape of NYC
  • Meet students from other schools who share the same interests
  • Use and learn industry software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp
  • Develop a mock-design project with your teammates and mentors

College Preparation

Graduating Seniors planning to major in fields related to the design and build industry have the opportunity to apply for scholarships. All participants entering their Junior year in high school are invited to participate in an annual event at which ACE GNY alumni, mentors and college representatives share insight into selecting a college and tips for strengthening college applications. Graduating Seniors are invited to an annual event, exploring with ACE GNY alumni, what to expect in their first year of architecture/engineering school and how best to prepare for entering college, students also have the opportunity to meet other ACE GNY students who will be attending the same universities.

Alumni Internships/Support

ACE GNY has started an ACE GNY Alumni Internship program in which ACE GNY helps to match alumni with internships offered at mentor firms. ACE GNY also offers skill-building and networking events for ACE GNY alumni during academic breaks and over the summer break.

Mentor Support and Recognition

ACE GNY offers professional development opportunities for the over 700 mentors involved in our program. Each year, ACE GNY organizes professional development breakfasts that are open to all participating mentors; the breakfasts include panels that explore cutting-edge changes in the industry, skill-development workshops, and case studies examining important aspects of the design and build field. ACE GNY also hosts mentor networking events throughout the year, and a large mentor appreciation event each summer.
