New Directions for 2017 CIRT-ACE National Design Competition
The Construction Industry Round Table (CIRT), in partnership with ACE, has announced the design challenge topics for the 2017 competition as well as a new digital platform for creating and submitting entries. Now in the final stages of joint development by CIRT and the Chicago Architecture Foundation, the digital platform will add unprecedented flexibility and efficiency to the competition. Among other features, the new online version will allow team members to work individually as well as collectively, mentors to remotely review their team’s work, and entries to be saved, reproduced and archived.

The conversion to the new digital platform has delayed publication of the full competition package until later this fall. In the meantime, to enable teams to begin preliminary work, descriptions of the three competition challenges have been posted the ACE website. They are:
Presidential Library and Museum
Upgrade a Structure
Open Spaces Design
Adjustments in this year’s competition schedule will be necessary. The intention is to keep this year’s schedule of deadlines roughly similar to schedules from previous years. The final competition in Washington, DC is set for April 24, 2017. Three teams will be invited to compete.

Stay tuned for news about the full competition package as well as a webinar explaining the new digital platform.
ACE Again Featured on National PBS Network Broadcast
Former ACE student and now mentor Darpan Patel and recently graduated ACE student Jesus Davaloz are interviewed by Ju Ju Chang.
For the second year in a row, the nationally broadcast PBS TV program American Graduate Day showcased ACE as an effective example of how mentors help students graduate from high school and prepare them for the work world. The six-minute segment featured a live interview with ACE alum and current mentor Darpan Patel and just graduated ACE student Jesus Davaloz, both with the Eastern Pennsylvania affiliate. Darpan mentored the team that placed second in the 2016 National Design Competition. Now a freshman at Temple University, Jesus presented his team’s project at the competition in Washington.

A video will be posted on the ACE website soon.
Widely Watched Webinar on How Affiliates Can Introduce Students to the Trades/Crafts
In early August ACE presented an hour-long webinar focusing on ways the Atlanta, Los Angeles, Central Pennsylvania, Chicago and Boston ACE affiliates introduce students to skilled trades and crafts and explaining their important role in the construction process. More than 65 affiliate leaders and mentors around the country signed up to participate. The video, a copy of PPT slides, and responses to questions can be viewed here.

Planning is underway for additional webinars on specific topics of broad interest and value to affiliates and mentors.
