Thomas, a recently retired division director at the General Services Administration, has been a mentor in the Washington, D.C. affiliate for over five years and a board member for over 10 years. His commitment is evident to both other mentors and the students. He has mentored dozens of young people during his time with ACE, attended and judged numerous student presentations, and served on the scholarship selection committee. In particular, Thomas was instrumental in starting and serving as a mentor for the ACE DC team at Friendship Tech Prep, a public charter school that serves primarily low income students. He also supported Tech Prep students in their post-secondary studies, even helping students secure financial aid, scholarships and internship opportunities. As the chair of the affiliate’s mentor recruitment and training committee, he has facilitated mentor training sessions and started or supported new mentor teams. He assisted in securing training locations in the D.C. Metro area, and organized and attended mentor appreciation events.
